How To Buy A Ski Boat
Over time the sport of skiing has evolved and changed quite a bit. There are skiers that want small and soft wakes while wake boarders prefer big wakes that allow them to launch into big aerial maneuvers. This is why it is important you buy the right ski boat for your needs so that you don't waste your money buying a boat that won't match with your preferred ski sport.
First you want to consider the basic options available to you. If you want power then you should consider a boat with an inboard engine that is located in the hull of the boat. For less power but more maneuverability you should consider an outboard engine which is clamped onto the transom.
Then if you want a combination of power and maneuverability you should consider an inboard/outboard engine which gives you the best of both worlds. It is also important that you understand the difference between the two engines.
After you have considered the basics you need to consider the amenities available with the boat. If you are going to be using your boat for a lot of skiing or other water activities you should make sure it has a swim platform included since this makes it easier to climb back into the boat after a long and tiring day of skiing on the water. It may also be a good idea to find a boat with overhead racks which make it much easier to store all of your sporting gear in a safe and secure environment.
When it comes time to check over the boat you need to bring along a checklist or at least have a good memory so that you can thoroughly inspect all of the important parts of the boat. This can help you to ensure you are buying a sound boat that doesn't have any problems.
Be sure to check the overall condition of the interior such as the carpeting and where things are located. You want to make sure you will be comfortable in the interior, even if you are only going to be eating lunch inside it should be comfortable for the number of people you are planning to have and easy to maneuver around in when cooking.
Check fiberglass for blistering, while this is only a cosmetic issue it can be very expensive to fix later. Make sure the engine mounts have tight lag bolts, if the bolts are loose then the stringer has begun to rot. Make sure there is no water in the engine oil and that there are no leaks in the belts or hoses around the engine.
Ask the seller to turn on the engine so that you can check the temp, oil pressure, alternator output and any leaks in the water pump. This also allows you to make sure the engine doesn't have excessive smoke or noise which can ruin your fun day on the lake. If possible it is best to take the boat out on the lake for a test drive before purchasing and you should avoid buying any ski boat that you can't test on the actual open water.
